One of the things we love about the fashion world is how designers are constantly turning to “ugly” things for inspiration, and making those “ugly” things highly coveted (remember Chanel’s house-arrest anklet?). For Spring 2014, designers decided to tackle the tackiness of wearing socks with heels and sandals (formerly fashion no-nos), and make the look fresh, hip, and polished.
The King of ugly-pretty, Karl Lagerfeld, outdid himself at Chanel by showing hybrid sock-boots: boots with the socks already built in. Genius, potentially awful, and totally amazing! We predict that pre-orders for these shoes will be through the roof.
Saint Laurent showed a more accessible version of the trend by accenting 80s power suits with thick socks and kitten heels . The great thing about Saint Laurent’s take is that, unlike Chanel’s one-of-a-kind bootie, you can recreate this look at home right now! Grab a pair of thick men’s socks (or your own glittery version) and stuff your feet into your favorite heels. Wear with skinny cropped trousers or a flirty dress, and voila! The SS14 look during winter 2013.
Prada opted for a quirkier interpretation of the trend for their Spring 2014 runway show. Miuccia’s version of socks-with-shoes relied on athletic high socks and sandals, believe it or not. The look put a glam twist on sportswear, featuring high socks embellished with colorful jewels and Birkenstock-esque sandals with 3-inch heels.
Street stylers took this trend and ran with it! Nary a day goes by on a street style blog without a snap of a socks-with-heels/sandals look. The trend is so open-ended that you pretty much can’t go wrong- athletic socks, fuzzy socks, men’s socks, embellished socks, and printed socks look great with heels, strappy sandals, Birkenstocks, booties, and platforms!
Experiment & go crazy with this one- it’s gonna be the “It” look for a while
